SACRED CREATURES

Original Exhibit Dates: January 2011

Our fifteenth exhibit was inspired by our community's commitment to conservation and wildlife preservation here on Sanibel and Captiva Islands. This exhibit featured seven artists who hold a reverence and respect for their subjects that, together with their exceptional talent, translates into wondrous and wonderful works of art. The work in this exhibit is a tribute to the creatures that make our world a more astonishing place.

Sherry Rohl, who is noted for her powerful equine paintings, returned with her most recent work, as did Jill Brougher, who added color to her sophisticated and sensual drawings of Sanibel shells, along with master glassblower Elodie Holmes of Santa Fe, NM, who created creatures from the sea.

New to the gallery was Gretchen Scharnagl from Florida International University with her intimate, detailed drawings of insects, and Jean Noon, who makes wire sculpture of the animals that share her Maine farm.

And in true Sanibel style, the birds that we so love will be honored both in the exquisite paintings of England's Lynne Windsor and the elaborately stitched tapestry installation of South Carolina's Fran Gardner.
